Echoes 2.0
A camera captures the movement in front of the building and turns it into a live generated image — the audience becomes part of the projection.
Echoes 2.0 is an interactive facade projection created in 2025 for the Mainz Leuchtet late light festival and projected onto the Mainz Store at the tourist information in Mainz, Germany. For three hours, a camera captured the movement of people on the square and translated it into a live generated, visually distorted image: visitors became part of the installation themselves.
In April 2026 the piece was shown a second time, again for three hours, at Waschhaus Potsdam as part of the 55th Sehsüchte International Student Film Festival.
Echoes 2.0 is a sensory experience of time and transience. At first glance it is unclear what exactly is being shown: abstract forms, fragments of light, fleeting silhouettes. Only through active exploration — through movement, stillness or deliberate gestures — does the image begin to resolve. Gradually the participants realise that they are part of the projection themselves and can find their own movement patterns among the fragments. That moment of recognition sparks curiosity and invites a dialogue with the installation.
At its core, Echoes 2.0 deals with self-reflection and self-discovery in a fragmented world of perception. Your own presence is always visible but never fully within reach — it breaks apart, shifts and keeps escaping direct grasp. The art of finding oneself becomes an active undertaking.
An immersive soundscape accompanies the visual transformations, tied to the movement of the image tiles. Sound and image reinforce one another and create a dense, atmospheric effect that draws in not only those interacting but also passers-by. Echoes 2.0 sits between play, reflection and poetic self-encounter.
At the Sehsüchte festival
In April 2026 we showed Echoes 2.0 at the 55th Sehsüchte International Student Film Festival at Waschhaus Potsdam — the largest student film festival in Europe.
Background
Since 2023, the Time-Based Media programme at Mainz University of Applied Sciences has created the projection content for Mainz Leuchtet. Artistic and organisational direction lies with professors Tjark Ihmels, Daniel Seideneder, Pascal Kulcsár, Benjamin Hohnheiser and Olaf Hirschberg.
