29 projection surfaces, motion tracking and projection mapping create a space for self-reflection: you meet your own image — and the gaze of others.
Echoes from Beyond: Where Yourself multiplies is an interactive room installation built from 29 projection surfaces, shown publicly on 10 July 2025, from 4 to 10 pm, at Kulturei in Mainz, Germany. Around 70 people experienced it over the course of the evening.
The installation opens a space in which perception of the self and of others becomes tangible in an unusual way. Visitors encounter their own image in new forms across the projection surfaces — while being exposed to the gaze of others at the same time.
The Work
While some act in the light, others remain in the dark as observers. This spatial separation creates a resonant space between visibility and distance, reflection and interpretation. The question "How do I see myself — and how do others see me?" is not merely posed here but experienced directly, together.
The audiovisual installation engages with self-reflection, self-presentation and the question of free will. Who am I? Why am I the way I am? What if I had made different choices? What if I had grown up somewhere else? What if I had become a different person altogether?

Bachelor's thesis and funding
The interactive room installation is the joint bachelor's thesis of Maryna Komisarova and Meike Schalk. Its realisation was funded by the film and media support programme for emerging talent of Rhineland-Palatinate.
